A cracked tooth may seem like a small dental problem, but it can be a big pain. Symptoms of a cracked tooth include pain when chewing, sensitivity to hot, cold, and sweet, pressure sensitivity, or a combination of these. Often, the pain comes and goes, so you may not suspect that the source of it is a cracked tooth. The pain can be localized, or it can cause a larger area of your mouth to feel sore, making it difficult to identify which tooth is causing the discomfort you’re feeling.
Cracked teeth don’t resolve on their own; they need treatment. Even small movement of the pieces of your cracked tooth when you bite or chew can cause the pulp of your tooth to become irritated. Because the pulp is rich in blood vessels and nerve endings, this can be very painful. When your bite is released, the crack in your tooth can close quickly, which also causes sharp pain. Without treatment, your tooth’s pulp will become damaged, which causes ongoing pain throughout the day, even when you’re not biting or chewing. Without treatment, cracks may lead to the pulp becoming infected; this infection can spread to surrounding gum, bone, and even other parts of the body via the bloodstream.

Assuming your tooth is only cracked above the gumline, we will perform a root canal to remove any damaged pulp, then seal the tooth and repair the damage to the structure by placing a crown.
If you have a cracked tooth that is not causing any pain, you may only need to have your tooth polished if the cracks are in the enamel, or have a dental filling, inlay or onlay, or crown to repair the crack and prevent it from worsening.
